A Summary from  the "Australian Radiation Laboratory":

UPF - What does it mean?

Ultraviolet radiation or UV, is present in sunlight. Sunburn is a sign that your skin has received too much UV. Over exposure to UV over many years can cause more serious health problems such as skin cancer or cataracts. Garments that are sensibly designed for sun protection reduce your UV exposure.

It is often difficult to tell if a fabric offers good sun protection. The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) shows how well a fabric protects your skin from solar UV and lets you select sun protective clothing with confidence.

Remember that the garment only protects the skin it covers. Protect other sites by wearing a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and use shaded outdoor areas.

UPF ratings range from 15 to 50, Fabrics that rate higher than 50 are labeled UPF 50+. The table below shows how well fabrics of various UPF ratings block UV

The UPF Classification System

UPF Rating UV Protection UV Blocked
15, 20 Good Protection 93.3% to 95.8%
25, 30, 35 Very Good Protection 95.9% to 97.4%
40, 45, 50, 50+ Excellent Protection >97.5%
